He was known for his “menacing or filthy roles,” such as the stereotypically sexist Detective Sergeant Bill Otley in Prime Suspect. How Did Tom Bell’s Childhood Go?
When I was a child, I was sent to Morecambe, Lancashire, for the duration of the Second World War as part of an evacuation. I stayed there with three different families. 1948 was the year that Bell made his debut as an actor in school performances. He was only 15 years old at the time.
Keith, his younger sibling, became an actor just like their older brother did, following in his footsteps. After completing his high school education, he went on to study acting at the Bradford Civic Theatre with Esme Church. It was there that he became friends with Billie Whitelaw and Robert Stephens. In later years, he was a member of the repertory companies in Liverpool and Dublin.
How Was Tom Bell’s Personal Life?
The year 1960 marks the year when the pair first met, and their marriage lasted until 1976. They brought up an actor by the name of Aran, their son. He was married to the costume designer Frances Tempest from 1976 until the time of his death, and it was with her that he had two children, Nellie (who became his stepdaughter), and Polly (his daughter).

Bell agreed to participate in Hiller’s first feature film Love Me Still after being approached by a common acquaintance, show industry accountant Jose Goumal, who advised that Bell work with TV director Danny Hiller again. Hiller had previously directed episodes of Bell’s show.
Bell completed filming only a few days before he passed away, in spite of the evident health concerns he was experiencing. On October 4, 2006, at the age of 73, he passed away after being hospitalized for a short period of time.
A few days later, there was a broadcast of “the poignantly timed transmission of Prime Suspect – The Final Act,” in which “a clearly frail Otley died on-screen.”
